China orders overhaul of transportation safety after a slew of deadly accidents
After a series of tragedies in last one month, China’s transportation authority ordered local departments to conduct a thorough safety overhaul to avoid any in future.
Li Shenglin, head of the Ministry of Transportation (MOT), said in an emergency meeting called after the accident that local authorities should spare no efforts to put safety at first place. To avail and ensure a safe and reliable transport is one of the most important services to people, he said.
It was at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on a viaduct near the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang when bullet train D301 rear-ended D3115. The first four cars of the moving train fell off the viaduct onto the ground, while the last two cars of the stalled train derailed.
Initial findings showed that train D3115 had lost power and stalled only after being struck by lightning.
Twelve people are still in critical condition as reported by Cheng Jinguo, deputy head of the Wenzhou health bureau.
Wang said that the ministry will find out the cause through thorough investigations and take effective measures to prevent similar accidents.
“China’s high-speed train is advanced and qualified. We have confidence in it,” he said.
However, he also said that the high-speed railway service has been new in China and its safety still faces challenges and problems.
“Safety should be put as the top priority,” He said.
